Nike have always been known for their high profile sponsorship deals across every sport, consistently teaming up with athletes at the top of their game like Cristiano Ronaldo in football, Roger Federer in tennis and Mo Farah in athletics. And this is no different in golf, seeing the brand cooperating with former world no. 1 and golfing great Tiger Woods and last year’s no. 1 Rory McIlroy. Nike are pretty famous for their ads too, here’s one of our favourites featuring Rory and Tiger:
Fast forward 20 years and Nike are producing some of the best equipment available. Their Vapor Drivers are well-known at both amateur and pro level. But you may wonder what actually makes them so special?
The main difference between
Nike’s Vapor drivers and every other driver is the technology they have engineered for the club that can achieve superior distance, proven by Rory and many other pros that use their clubs. Nike developed their very own FlexLoft 2 technology that allows 15 different launch options. Not to mention they look pretty sleek in graphite black.
There are three variations of the Nike Vapor club head, the Pro, Flex and Speed. Each club head is designed for diverse playing styles.
The Flex is complete with Nike’s revolutionary FlexFlight technology encased in a carbon enhanced RZN cavity. This allows a player to alter the centre of gravity up, down, forward and back to finely tune distance and spin rates.
The Speed is designed to help players achieve a better flight with a higher launch angle than the others. Maximum ball speed is the focus with Nike’s FlyBeam structure and compression channel combining to stabilise the chassis forcing full energy into creating pure distance.
Lastly, the Vapor Pro uses a pear-shaped head and covert cavity back which redistributes weight to the heel and toe to maximise forgiveness, getting the best performance even from off centre strikes. These are quite possibly the best drivers Nike have ever made. A brief history of Nike Golf
Nike are first and foremost footwear specialists, having designed sports footwear for the athletically minded and style conscious since 1971. They are iconic for their shoes and their famous swoosh. In 1986, after establishing itself in the trainer market, they produced their first pair of golf shoes. Despite lucrative sponsorship deals with pros Peter Jacobsen and Curtis Strange, the shoes of that era did not sell well. It wasn’t until 1996 that they truly made their entrance into the golf world elite. Upon signing an unproven, young golfer who had only turned pro that year by the name Tiger Woods. Here’s one of the defining moments of both his career and for Nike Golf, take a look:
Nike’s sponsorship of Tiger Woods may have started in ’96 but the Nike Golf business established two years later in 1998, and another two years followed before Tiger began using Nike Golf equipment on the big stage in tournaments. The first item being the Tour Accuracy TW golf ball. It was a huge success with customers, mainly down to Tiger’s endorsement and his performance in the 2000 millennium season. It was one of his best as world no. 1 winning three of four major championship events that year. This was the year of the famous advert of Woods bouncing a ball off the face of an iron. Here’s that ad:
Nike released their first set of clubs in 2002, with the Pro Combo set of forged irons. Nowadays we offer a whole host of
Nike Golf clubs, from drivers to fairway woods and hybrids, to putters, wedges and irons. Nike golf shoes and boots on offer at GolfSupport including many classics and new additions for the 2015 season. There are collections from the likes of Tiger Woods and the TW15 shoes and other popular styles from the Lunar Control III, FI Impact 2 and Lunar Bandon boots which all feature two fantastic technologies. Firstly, Dynamic Flywire which gives greater mobility and harnesses the power of your swing by keeping the weight of the shoe down. Dynamic Fit then eliminates space between shoe and foot through an inner material which moulds around the foot.
“I’d heard loads about Nike’s Vapor drivers from my mates and seen them on screen being used by the pros, but I didn’t actually get why they were so good. After coming into the GolfSupport store in Mansfield, Colin showed me exactly how they could benefit me. He explained all the intricate parts of each of the three club heads and demonstrated the custom options available with various shafts and grips. I loved it! And had to have one after that so I ordered a custom Vapor Speed, a great club and brilliant service from GolfSupport!” Graham from Worksop.
“I wanted a full set of Nike clubs complete with driver, fairway wood, irons, a putter and bag. The guys at GolfSupport were more than helpful in sourcing all my clubs in the correct grips and lofts. They were a pleasure throughout my order and I would highly recommend them to anyone! Cheers again.” Paul from Loughborough.
“I wanted to find the best putter to suit my grip and putting stroke. I tend to stand closer to the ball when approaching my putts, and I wasn’t aware that there were putters developed to accommodate this. GolfSupport showed me that the Nike Method Matters putter came in four different head styles with the face balanced putter being the right fit for my stroke. It had a terrific feel and the guys even adjusted the weighting to my liking. Impressive knowledge and unbeatable service, thanks again GolfSupport!” James from Derby.
