Ping is one of the most recognisable golf brands in the world. Based in Phoenix, Arizona. Ping was founded by Karsten Solheim back in 1959 from very humble beginnings. Following a career as an engineer at the General Electric Company, Karsten Solheim would tinker in his garage in Redwood City, California making putters as a hobby. In 1967 he would resign from his job at the General Electric Company to develop the Ping company.
A moment in History.
1959: At home one evening Karsten Solheim makes a few putts with his first prototype putter head, and the tuning-fork-like construction makes a 'Ping' sound when impacting the ball. Karsten excitedly runs into the kitchen to announce to his wife Louise, “I've got a name for my putter” Soon after Karsten files for a patent on the PING 1-A putter, three years later the patent is granted and a brand is born.
Take a look at Inside Ping's world-famous "Gold Putter Vault" below.
Ping has produced some of the most successful putters ever, the Anser putter, a putter so incredibly successful that Ping celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2016. The idea came to Karsten in a flash, as inspiration often does. He quickly sketched the design on a dust sleeve of a 78 rpm vinyl record, and a putter that would change golf was born. The Anser would go on to win over 500 Tour wins, including 19 men's major championships. Today there are over 300 models that have been made and played. High profile players who use their equipment is endless, from the old guard of Lee Westwood, Bubba Watson and Stuart Cink to the young guns of Viktor Hovland, Tony Finau, Tyrell Hatton, Cameron Champ and Joaquin Niemann.
Ping understands more than any other golf company that every golfer is different, that's why they insist on club fitting, many clubs dotted around the country do this service but for the ultimate experience take a trip to Pings' national fitting centre in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire is highly recommended.
