SkyTrak Launch Monitor

SkyTrak Launch Monitor

Golf in this day and age has become a quest for more and more information. Historically, this information has been extremely expensive and somewhat exclusive to those who can facilitate the systems. There is now a more affordable, more available alternative. We are delighted to introduce you to the world’s first truly affordable and portable launch monitor... SkyTrak.

There are two main names in launch monitor technology, Trackman and GC2. The latter is what we use at Golfsupport for all our custom fitting, ball fitting, gap testing and of course lessons.   The system is fantastic, accurate, simple to use but it is costly.  Trackman is used by many tour players and coaches and its pedigree speaks for itself, however, the cost is again extremely high not to mention the space you need to have to use both systems to their potential.

Below is a product comparison between TrackMan and SkyTrak. First of all, lets take a look at the numbers with a driver.

The figures in red show TrackMan whilst the yellow is SkyTrak.

As we can see here the numbers are extremely similar;

Approx 1 MPH on club head speed

Approx 1 deg on launch angle

Approx 100 RPM on back spin

Approx 200RPM on side spin

Marginal difference on Carry Distance.

This is extremely impressive for a unit which costs so much less and is so much more portable than its rival.

SkyTrak trackman 6-iron comparison

Above, we can see the 6 iron test also yielded very similar results.

SkyTrak works in a very simple way. It is a photometric, or camera style launch monitor, this means the system works by taking a lot of high speed pictures as the club goes through the ball and afterwards. In doing this, SkyTrak is able to produce a very accurate representation of what your ball flight will look like through the air. GC2 works in a very similar way to this and it is just brilliant.

With SkyTrak, golfers will now be able to see exactly how far their clubs are carrying, how they are launching their driver, if they need to work on their delivery to improve spin numbers and exactly how much side spin is on their fade or draw, all in a very easy to understand format.

SkyTrak Features

The software runs on an iPad and does not even need a WiFi connection (although having WiFi will let you use other features such as the Golf tournament simulation and your shot history) so you can practice away without having to worry about having an internet connection.

SkyTrak can be used either inside or outside depending on your requirements. As with all these things, if you are using indoors just make sure you have plenty of space to swing free from anything breakable! If you are using the unit outdoors, you will get around 4 hours of continuous use from the battery. It is perhaps worth noting that if the unit is being used outdoors the figures can be effected slightly by extremes in light or dark or indeed the sun shining into the camera lens.

The only other condition to add before you can bat away is to make sure you use the golf ball you play, in good condition and clean. As with all launch monitors if you use old, dirty or damaged balls the numbers will not be in anyway accurate.

We are so impressed with this piece of kit. I would almost go as far as to say it is essential for anybody who is serious about getting the most out of their game. By seeing and utilising numbers there is nowhere to hide, your game will become easy to understand and therefore easier to improve. A truly incredible device at a ridiculous price...what else would a golfer need?
