Do I Need Custom Fitted Golf Clubs?

Whether you’re a professional golfer, or an amateur with a passion for the sport, one main thing you need to be aware of is the importance of getting the right set up to suit your game. From Mizuno’s custom fitted golf clubs to Srixon custom fitted golf clubs, there are plenty of brands that offer high quality equipment that can be tailored to suit your game. Below are some of the benefits of custom fitted golf clubs and what the process involves.

Who needs custom fitting?

The simple answer is anybody who wants to play golf! It’s often misunderstood that only pro golfers should get custom fitted golf clubs. However, this is not the case! The benefits of custom fitted golf clubs are true for all golfing levels – even for beginners. Even as a novice golfer, you will have consistencies in your game. For example, we are not all the same height which means that using a club that is not the correct length for you can hinder your progress. The size of the grip may also be too thick or too thin for you, if the grip size or length of club is not correct for you then you are already at a disadvantage.

Why are custom fitted golf clubs a good idea?

A golf club that has been fitted for you will enable you to start your golfing adventure without being at an immediate disadvantage.

Using an ill-fitting club can cause numerous problems, not only at the start but later in your golfing life. If the club does not fit you correctly, the first issue is that the club will dictate how you address the ball. The dynamics of the swing will be affected by this initial address position and can be responsible for the golfer being unable to obtain the required positions in the golf swing without performing an incredible amount of manipulation leading to poor performance and inconsistency.

If you are lucky enough to be able to play with an ill-fitting club at the start of your golfing experience, often once you get to a level where shaft flex and lie angle become more of a factor it can then become harder to adjust to the correct fitting. This is because your body will have adjusted to the ill-fitting club and developed a workable swing around this golf club.  This may slow down your progression with your newly custom fitted club that you were hoping would take you to the next ability level.

Another issue that arises is not having the correct club head size for the golfer. When being fitted for a golf club it is imperative that you select the club head that best suits your game.

A large club head generally gives a great forgiveness to the golfer and can help build confidence and progression. A smaller club head is more workable and allows the golfer to shape the ball more but is much less forgiving than a large club head. Selecting the clubhead that best suits your game will help improve consistency and help you enjoy the game!

If you still have you doubts about whether you should tailor your golf club or use a standard one think about it this way: you wouldn’t buy a pair of size 6 shoes if you wore a size 12, and it is the same with golf clubs.

What is the fitting process?

At Golfsupport we tailor the golf clubs to you and your needs.

If you already have a club you will be asked to bring it to the fitting, so that we can evaluate the numbers produced and then start the process of finding you the best club to help you improve and enjoy golf.

However, if you are a complete beginner and don’t have a club you will be given a standard one to work from initially. When choosing the club for you, your budget will be of course taken into consideration.

A custom fitting will look at the following:

  • Club head size
  • Shaft flex
  • Shaft weight
  • Shaft material (e.g.: steel or graphite)
  • Length of club
  • Lie angle
  • Grip style
  • Grip size

For our fittings we use a Foresight GC2 Launch monitor, this monitor takes reading from each swing and helps create a picture of the club’s performance and helps find other options to produce a better, more consistent ball flight and better performing golf club

How to determine the perfect shaft:

  • Build it around the golfer’s technique and height
  • Try different weight to see which one feels right for you (not correct)
  • Look at the ball’s flight and lie angle
  • Take wrist to floor measurements

When finding your grip size:

  • Measure the size of your hands
  • Look at the shape of the golfer’s shot

At Golfsupport we offer you some of the best golf brands such as Cobra custom fitted golf clubs, TaylorMade custom fitted golf clubs and Titleist custom fitted golf clubs

During the fitting the professional who is guiding you through your fitting experience will give feedback and offer advice to help you select the best option to help you improve your golf.
