Callaway Great Big Bertha and Alpha 816
When you think of golf clubs that broke the mould, few come close to Callaway’s original Big Bertha series drivers. Since then, the game has changed and with the dual launch of the new Great Big Bertha and the Alpha 816, Callaway have once again moved the goal posts on driver technology.
Great Big Bertha
For all you Callaway purists out there this club is one that you need to experience. It is the lightest head that Callaway have ever used for a driver, letting them manipulate the weight to where it is most effective, as we have seen in the Big Bertha of the last two years the centre of gravity is low but rearward (away from the centre of the head) to help the ball launch higher with less effort.
There has been a tweak to the fantastic R.Moto face technology on both new drivers, this technology works in two ways.
- A System of internal ribs make the perimeter of the face stronger than last years model, this translates into more ball speeds from high and low impacts.
- Variable Face Thickness (VFT) Callaway have used VFT for years and it continues to make an appearance because it is so effective. The face is thinner in very carefully mapped locations to expand the effective sweet spot that gives you the fast ball speed.
With a head size of 460CC, the R.Moto face technology and the new centre of gravity location; Callaway have ensured that the MOI in this club is very high, making it forgiving as well as powerful.
Adjustable Perimeter Weighting (APW)

The APW track at the back of the Great Big Bertha will be familiar from the Big Bertha of last year; however it has again been improved by the Callaway boffins. There is 10.5 grams of moveable weight along the rear perimeter of this club which can add draw or fade bias which Callaway claim equates to around 400RPM of side spin and an overall dispersion correction of 18 yards. This could seriously help when it comes to fine tuning ball flight.
Big Bertha Alpha 816 Driver
Big brother to the Great Big Bertha, designed for players who want a smaller profile, deeper face, more workability and extreme distance. This is the ultimate players driver.
[caption id="attachment_1877" align="aligncenter" width="300"] Re-imagined gravity core technology lets you tune in your spin, shape and distance possibilities.[/caption]
Last year’s 815 Double Black Diamond has one gravity core in the centre of the club; this new version now has two gravity ports giving you 4 distinct possibilities for increasing your ball speed, nailing your spin numbers and getting the most out of this driver. By moving the gravity core to the side of the club you can now manipulate draw or fade bias, set the gravity core up or down in your desired port and you unleash your maximum driving potential.
The Alpha 816 is fitted with the same R.Moto face as the Great Big Bertha giving all the same advantages.
As previously mentioned, the face is much deeper on the 816 compared to the Great Big Bertha, this has been done in line with Callaway’s research with better players and tour pro’s alike. It's also worth noting that the centre of gravity on this driver is low to deliver low spin, there are also no decals on the top the club, just a matte black finish.
Both drivers have the very simple to use OptiFit hosel and both come with a huge variety of shafts. As always, with all this technology at your disposal getting custom fitted is essential to get the most from your driver.
