The Best Golfer of All Time
Who’s the best golfer of all time? Was it Jack Nicklaus? Tiger Woods? Or even Byron Nelson or Sam Snead?
All of them dominate the record books and have sailed into the Hall of fame, bar Tiger who undoubtedly will enter next year after his 40th birthday. Their talent was unquestionable. But how do the record books look and who holds what?
Both Jack Nicklaus and Sam Snead hold the most Major wins and PGA Tour Wins, topping Tiger Woods in each respect. But total professional accolades alone don’t make the mark of the best player, if this was true, then there would be no point in writing this. Bear in mind that Tiger held the World No.1 spot for 68% of his career, that’s almost two thirds! Let that sink in. Rory McIlroy looks next in line to take it to the top with 4 major wins and 11 Tour wins by the age of 25 years old. Although Tiger Woods had accomplished 25 Tour wins by this age in 2000, and 5 majors. Byron Nelson holds the record for most tour wins in a season at 18 and most consecutive top 10 finishes for four straight years. However, it is frequently debated that Nelson played in a field with less depth that year because of the war, nonetheless he was playing great golf.
Could Jordan Spieth or Rory McIlroy reach the heights of ‘The Golden Bear’ and his Major trophy cabinet? Could Bubba hit a bigger drive than veteran Mike Austin? And will anyone ever dominate like Byron Nelson did back in the 1940s? We don’t know, but one thing is certain. With so many different Tour event winners last season, the competition is strong, probably the strongest it’s been since Tiger’s heyday. The question is can Tiger pull it back and get those last few Tour wins to break Sam Snead’s record; he’s only 3 away. For us though, he’s still probably the best of all time.
