What Is it?
It is an opportunity for a week and beyond to raise the profile of women’s sport across the United Kingdom. Likewise, it provides the opportunity to those delivering, working or playing in sport to appreciate and acknowledge the vast contribution women make to the industry.
Why Is It Important?
According to the BBC, Women’s Sport:
- Receives only 7% of all sports media coverage
- Just 0.4% of commercial investment in sport
- Currently 1.6 million fewer women than men playing sport on a regular basis

What’s The Goal?
The main goal of Women’s Sport Week is to get more girls and women actively playing sport.
Drawing upon the inspiration provided by the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio, it is encouraging sporting communities around the UK to use the week as an incentive to organise events and demonstrate their support to help girls and women achieve their full potential through sport.
At its core, the initiative also wants it make all women and girls, regardless of their background or ability, aware of all the sport opportunities available to them. Whether they be volunteering, coaching or boardroom related.
How Are They Making It Happen?
To support the goals and ambitions of Women’s Sport Week, there is a firm network in place to effectively support the sustainability of the initiative for years to come. Women’s Sport Week works closely with sporting bodies such as Sport England to break down barriers and make it easier for more girls and women to engage in sport. It has developed close relationships with various different schools, colleges and universities to promote and provide information about what it is and intending to do. All this is also underpinned by supporting powerful and monumental campaigns such as Sport England’s “This Girl Can”.
